Craniotomy for Aneurysm Treatment:  Southern California Center for Neuroscience and Spine at the Chapman Medical Center

Craniotomy in Treating Aneurysm

When a patient has an aneurysm in the brain, this can be a very serious situation that requires immediate medical attention.  Performing a craniotomy is the most generally accepted method of treating someone with an aneurysm.  The purpose of the craniotomy is to place a titanium clip on the neck of the aneurysm in order to stop it from bleeding.  If it is has already ruptured, stopping the bleeding is crucial to prevent a fatal event.

In addition to stopping the bleeding , the procedure can treat vasospasm, a constriction of the blood vessels which can lead to an increase in suffering a stroke.  Many patients who suffer from an aneurysm also have a high risk of a stroke due to the development of vasospasm from the bleeding.  The craniotomy will prevent that from continuing to occur, in addition to treatment with medication.

Procedures for the craniotomy for an aneurysm involve general anesthesia.  The head will be held immobile while the surgeon performs an incision to move the scalp and opens an area into the skull using a drill.  With the use of an operating microscope, one of our skilled neurosurgeons from the Southern California Center for Neuroscience and Spine at the Chapman Medical Center will open a path into the area of the brain where the aneurysm is located.  Any areas that are bleeding will be cauterized and vessels feeding the aneurysm will be closed off, with the aneurysm being dissected as part of the procedure.  Once the procedure is completed, the skull and scalp will be put back in place and stitches or staples are used to close the incision.  Rest is required after the procedure, with a gradual return to regular activity advised.
