The dorsal column stimulator procedure is performed in two separate surgeries.  The first one, which is temporary and utilizes an external device, is performed to see if this type of operation could be successful in giving some immediate pain relief to the patient.   If this proves to be the case a second surgery is then carried out to do the actual permanent implant.  In each surgical procedure the time in the operating room is approximately 3 hours. From the medical viewpoint the operation is considered successful if the patient experiences less pain or if the pain is totally eliminated.
