Pituitary Tumor
Treatment for Pituitary Tumors in Southern California
Pituitary tumors are irregular growths which occur on the pituitary, a pea size gland located at the base of the brain. The pituitary gland regulates important hormones amongst other functions. The majority of tumors which are found on the pituitary gland are benign and stay confined to nearby tissue. They are sometimes exposed during an MRI scan. Tumors on the pituitary gland can greatly affect your health in various ways.
The cavity which contains the gland can be overtaxed by the size of the tumor; this can cause serious damage to the brain and nerves in surrounding areas. Another common result of a pituitary tumor is an over-abundance of certain hormones which can lead to a number of negative conditions. It is also possible for tumors to cause the gland to produce too little hormone, resulting in hypothyroidism and other serious complications.

Removal of the tumor is usually necessary as it could cause serious complications including blindness if left untreated. It is sometimes possible to remove the tumor through the sinuses. Where this is not an option, they must be removed through the skull.
