Treating Spasticity in Southern California

Southern California Center for Neuroscience and Spine serving Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, & San Diego

After a spinal cord injury, spasticity may develop. Spasticity may be the symptom of more than one problem related to the spine. It is essentially the involuntary jerking of muscles which occur due to the fact that the spinal cord is closely connected to reflex activity. The spinal cord has autonomic (involuntary) functions which are influenced by the brain. Most people, who have an injured spinal cord, still have the rest of their spinal cord intact beneath the Injury. This portion of the spine still works properly but it is not under the influence of the brain which regulates it. This causes exaggerated motions of reflex activity.

Spasticity may develop due to damaged nerves which travel from the brain down through the spinal cord. It can also result from injury to the brain in the area which controls movement.

Spasticity Symptoms and Treatment

Some of the symptoms associated with spasticity are:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Scissoring (when the legs cross involuntarily)
  • Muscle spasms
  • Exaggerated deep tendon reflexes
  • Rapid Muscle contractions
  • Hypertonicity (increased muscle tone)
  • Speech impairment
  • Gait problems
  • Stiff muscles

If spasticity goes untreated it can result in serious complications such as muscle stiffening and contracture. This may cause the joints to remain bent in a fixed position.  Meet with a qualified doctor today and allow them to review the necessary tests. The spasticity will need to be determined as to severity by a detailed examination of the body part and a complete physical. Your medical history will be evaluated thoroughly. Treatment for spasticity may include medication and occupational and physical therapy programs. Local injections of phenol or botulinum toxin may relax targeted muscles.
