A narrow tube is inserted into the area of the fracture. Through this tube is fed a special type of balloon that is inflated after insertion. This creates space around the fracture, restoring its natural shape and creates a cavity in the center of the vertebrae. Once the opening is created with the balloon, it is removed and a material that is similar to cement is inserted in the opening that was created through injection. Once the material hardens, which occurs rather quickly, the bone then becomes stabilized.
This revolutionary new technique allows patients to return home following surgery the same day and enabling them to return to normal activities shortly thereafter. There are few complications or risks to this procedure, making it an excellent choice for patients suffering from pain following fractures or osteoporosis.
